Waiting is Not an Option

“You can’t catch a fish if your line isn’t in the water”

-Coach Jerry Precise

OK maybe somebody way back when said that before me, but it does not make it any less true.

If you are waiting for something to happen and not doing something to make it happen, then it probably is not going to happen.

If you are in a relationship that has gone sour, and you are waiting for it to magically get better, it won’t. Hate to break it to you, but you either keep swallowing the poison or you get off your butt and try to make your situation better. Either heal through mutual communications and effort, or work to exit the situation. There are options, but they all take effort.

If you are in a job that is going nowhere or sucking the life out of you every day, you either keep doing the same thing or you do something different. Either work to change the situation or most likely you move on. Key word “move”. Move, or stagnate and embrace the misery. Or maybe you are currently out of work. No one is going to knock on your door and make an offer.

Perhaps you have a child, or a parent, and they are struggling. And you honestly do not know what to do. Valid concern.   But the worst thing you can do is nothing. Someone is going to have to act, and it most likely needs to be you. They need help and they are your responsibility.

These are just a few examples of the life challenges people face every day.

So why do so many people fail to act? Fear of failure? Fear of rejection? Fear in general? That does happen, but many people don’t act because they don’t know where they want to go or need to go.

How often have you seen people jump from one bad relationship right into another, or they leave or lose a job only to go right back to the same toxic culture under a different name. They are so programmed they have lost the ability to free think.

And if you don’t know where you want to go you certainly don’t have a plan for getting there.

So how do you overcome the fear? How do you strengthen the action muscles?  How do you create a vision and an action plan?

This is where a Certified Life Coach can be a huge benefit.

  1. This really resonates. There is a retired law professor, Ann Althouse, who often says that “better than nothing is a high standard.” That is, just doing something to do something is no good. But that means that when you have to do something, you’d better figure out what you WANT to do. Great thoughts.
